Application Bulletins & Other Articles:

  • Ultraviolet Light in Arson Detection Evidence of accelerants is almost always invisible to the naked eye after they have been absorbed in a fire however UV light can assist in rapidly locating accelerant residues and in locating the point of origin of a fire. Furthermore, many ingredients of explosives (including anfo, nitrates, sulfur, fuel oil, paraffins, and P.E.T.N.) fluoresce. Metal fragments with traces of these residues can frequently be found with the use of UV light as well as molotov cocktail type containers. This explains how to use UV light in these investigations. UVP two page Application Bulletin AB-107, download size is 21,902 bytes (in Acrobat Reader ".pdf" format).

  • Detection of Oil And Grease Contamination with Ultraviolet Lamps UVP one page Application Bulletin AB-211. This download size is 60,760 bytes (in Acrobat Reader ".pdf" format).

  • Determining Occupational Exposure Limits to Ultraviolet Radiation Exposure to certain wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation will cause injury to the skin and eyes. This illustrated article explains phosphor-coated emitters, continuum emitters, 254nm line low pressure sodium emitters, how to measure the intensity of ultraviolet exposure, and from this measurement how to determine a safe Permissible Exposure Time (PET) limit. This UVP four page Application Bulletin AN A114 also refers to National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) standards. This download size is 224,078 bytes (in Acrobat Reader ".pdf" format).

  • Laboratory Applications for Ultraviolet Equipment This explains how UV equipment is employed in laboratory uses including: Paper and TLC Chromatography, Photo-Chemistry, Optics, Research Microscopy, Sterilization, Pharmaceuticals, Food and Agriculture, Mineral Identification. This is a good overview explaining the kinds of ultraviolet radiation and how they are produced, column chromatography, electrochromatography, spot test analysis, titration, tracer technology, wave length calibration and other applications. UVP sixteen page illustrated Application Bulletin AB-131, download size is 3,291,008 bytes (in Acrobat Reader ".pdf" format).

  • Leak Detection in Automotive Applications Oils such as those used in automotive engines will glow under UV illumination, thus making them easy to see and track to their source. This explains how UV high intensity lamps, particularly the Blak-Ray® B-100 series, can be used to solve the problem of finding oil and grease leaks of fluids quickly. This also explains the available UVP additives (or tracer dyes) and how they can be added to liquids so that leaks will fluoresce; this makes it possible to spot gasoline leaks, or radiator and water pump leaks for example. UVP sixteen page illustrated Application Bulletin AB-131, download size is 3,291,008 bytes (in Acrobat Reader ".pdf" format).

  • Measuring Black Light Intensity an explanation of the major problems associated with optical radiation measurements, and a guide about how the reader may obtain more accurate and meaningful measurements. Primary emphasis is on measuring irradiance using the UVP J-221 Radiometer. UVP two page illustrated Application Bulletin T-001 from 1977, download size is 289,598 bytes (in Acrobat Reader ".pdf" format).

  • Minerals Identification with Ultraviolet Lamps a review of some history of how selenium cell meters were used to measure black light intensity and how the technologies have evolved since to obtain more comprehensive measurements, and quickly. This mentions measuring irradiance using the UVP J-221, and J-0225 Radiometers. UVP one page color illustrated Application Bulletin AB-218, download size is 77,018 bytes (in Acrobat Reader ".pdf" format).

  • Nikon UV-105 Lens (formerly marketed as UV-Nikkor) overview of a limited production, special order Nikon lens distributed by Company Seven world-wide. The Nikon UV-105 is a 105mm f/4.5 is among the best of the very few high performance multispectral lenses ever developed for specialized applications in the ultraviolet portions of the spectrum. However, this is also a superb performer in the visible and into the near infrared portions of the spectrum too. The lens was originally developed for use with a conventional Nikon 35mm single lens reflex (SLR) film camera, but depending on the sensor and desired spectral response this lens can be used with Nikon or Fujifilm digital SLR systems too.

  • Photographing Fluorescent Minerals with Mineralight and Blak-Ray Portable Lamps Taking pictures in ultraviolet light of fluorescent minerals is a relatively simple operation if one follows certain basic requirements and understands the several variables that control what is obtained on the picture. This explains how to use UV light in these applications. UVP two page Application Bulletin AB-120, download size is 300,500 bytes (in Acrobat Reader ".pdf" format).

  • Radiation Measurements Guide an explanation of the major problems associated with optical radiation measurements, and a guide about how the reader may obtain more accurate and meaningful measurements. Primary emphasis is on measuring irradiance using the UVP UVX, J-221, and J-0225 Radiometers. UVP eight page illustrated Application Bulletin AN-1167, download size is 386,690 bytes (in Acrobat Reader ".pdf" format).

  • The Short Wave Prospecting Lamp In Scheelite Prospecting Some decades ago one of the UVP (then Ultra Violet Products, Inc.) prospecting customers located Scheelite worth more than $100,000,000. This explains how to use UV short wave lamps for scheelite and other minerals prospecting applications. UVP four page Application Bulletin AB-132, download size is 935,011 bytes (in Acrobat Reader ".pdf" format).

  • Solarization When many optical components are exposed to ultraviolet radiation they undergo changes that reduce their ability to transmit UV light, this phenomenon is called solarization. This is particularly a problem in those few elements that lose the ability to transmit UV rapidly. This three page illustrated article helps the reader to understand how solarization affects the different types of lamps. UVP Application Bulletin A-l 12, download size is 224,078 bytes (in Acrobat Reader ".pdf" format).

  • Understanding CCD Cameras a discussion explaining CCD cameras and the important considerations when choosing them particularly when using the camera with microscopes, spectrophotometers, for gel documentation, and with chemiluminescent detection systems. Discussion includes explanations of analog versus digital, CCD noise and signal-to-noise ratio, pixel size, 12 14 and 16 bit cameras, scan rate, binning. UVP two page Application Bulletin FP-114, download size is 36,274 bytes (in Acrobat Reader ".pdf" format).

  • Ultraviolet Spectrum Primer on-line illustrated article by Company Seven explaining the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum particulary as it applies to photographing or imaging objects in the UV. The UV-A, UV-B and UV-C are described.
